Ingredients

For the burgers

  • 3 lbs ground beef
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • salt and pepper
  • 12 hamburger buns
  • 12 slices of Swiss cheese
  • fresh arugala leaves

For the caramelized onions

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 6 tbsp butter
  • 4 yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp ground thyme
  • 1 dried bay leaf
  • 1 tsp pure maple syrup (or you can use brown sugar, if desired)
  • 1 tsp balsamic vinegar
  • salt and pepper

Instructions

To make the caramelized onions:

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, heat butter and olive oil.
  • Add onion, salt, pepper and bay leaf. Saute for 30 minutes or until onions are caramelized, stirring occasionally.
  • Turn heat off and put lid on skillet to keep warm until ready to serve.

To make the burgers:

  • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, salt and pepper. Using two forks or clean hands, mix until combined.
  • Divide meat mixture into 12 equal portions (I use a ½ cup measuring spoon) and form into patties. Press your thumb in center of each patty to ensure even grilling.
  • Grill on medium-high heat for about 5 minutes on each side. At the end of grilling time, add sliced cheese on top of burger patties.
  • Serve with buns and top generously with caramelized onions and fresh arugula. Enjoy!

Notes

Note: I use pure maple syrup as a sweetener in my recipes, as we try to avoid processed sugar.
