Equipment

  • 1 Bread Machine

Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 large egg slightly beaten
  • 4 tbsp butter room temperature
  • 3 ⅓ cup flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 2 ½ tsp active dry yeast

For the Filling

  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon

For the Caramel

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup

Instructions

Make the dough

  • Add milk, egg, butter, flour, sugar and salt (in this order) to the bread machine. Poke a hole in the middle of ingredients and add yeast in the well. Program machine to Dough Cycle.
  • When cycle is done, place dough on a floured surface. Knead dough for 1 minute, then let rest back in machine with the lid closed for about 15 minutes.

Make the Filling and Shape

  • Dump dough onto heavily floured surface and roll out into a rectangle. Spread 1/4 cup melted butter over dough, then sprinkle 1/4 cup (or more) of the cinnamon/sugar mixture evenly over dough.
  • Roll the dough up tightly top to bottom (towards you). Cut rolled up log into 1 ½ inch slices.

Make the Caramel Sauce

  • In a small pot, bring the butter and brown sugar to a boil. Turn off heat and add maple syrup, stir until combined. Pour caramel sauce into a 9x13 baking pan.

Rising and Baking the Dough

  • Place the cut cinnamon roll dough into the caramel baking pan. Cover and let rise until they double in size (about 45 minutes).
  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Bake rolls uncovered for 10-15 minutes. ***The cinnamon rolls bake nicer if you turn the oven down to 180 degrees halfway through the baking process.

Notes

If you don’t have a bread machine, use a stand mixer to combine all of the dough ingredients. Using a dough hook, let it knead the dough for 7-8 minutes. Transfer the sticky dough to a grease-lined bowl. Cover with a towel and let it rise for about 1-1.5 hours (or until twice its size.) It will be sticky so use lots of flour when rolling it out.
