Caramelized Onions Burger
Adding caramelized onion to this traditional burger is over-the-top easy and delicious! The perfect way to whip up a weeknight dinner that the whole family will enjoy!
Ingredients
For the burgers
- 3 lbs ground beef
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- salt and pepper
- 12 hamburger buns
- 12 slices of Swiss cheese
- fresh arugala leaves
For the caramelized onions
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 6 tbsp butter
- 4 yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tsp ground thyme
- 1 dried bay leaf
- 1 tsp pure maple syrup (or you can use brown sugar, if desired)
- 1 tsp balsamic vinegar
- salt and pepper
Instructions
To make the caramelized onions:
- In a large skillet over medium heat, heat butter and olive oil.
- Add onion, salt, pepper and bay leaf. Saute for 30 minutes or until onions are caramelized, stirring occasionally.
- Turn heat off and put lid on skillet to keep warm until ready to serve.
To make the burgers:
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, salt and pepper. Using two forks or clean hands, mix until combined.
- Divide meat mixture into 12 equal portions (I use a ½ cup measuring spoon) and form into patties. Press your thumb in center of each patty to ensure even grilling.
- Grill on medium-high heat for about 5 minutes on each side. At the end of grilling time, add sliced cheese on top of burger patties.
- Serve with buns and top generously with caramelized onions and fresh arugula. Enjoy!
Notes
Note: I use pure maple syrup as a sweetener in my recipes, as we try to avoid processed sugar.
