Introducing my Spring 2023 Capsule Wardrobe!
I’ve been having so much fun refreshing my closet for spring, using items I already own. Pulling out clothes that have been stored away in a bin during the winter months was a great refresh!
If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you will know that I committed to a #onebuyamonth challenge, where I’m only buying one item for myself each month this year. My goals are to save money, time, and energy by avoiding over-shopping, to alleviate clutter from my closet, and to simplify the decision making process of getting dressed each day.
This spring capsule collection of clothes is minimalistic, sporty and casual. Basically, the description of my lifestyle. The distinction between outfits include: errand-running, work-from-home, casual church, cozy, and a few dressier date night out items.
As I’ve started implementing a capsule wardrobe, I’ve enjoyed the boundary of only having a certain number of items. This helps me to really think about which items bring me joy and are worth keeping and repeating! The rest get stored in a bin and put away, which I will either bring out again for a different season or give away if I realize it is just not serving me anymore. One thing I’ve realized about myself is that I get overwhelmed when I have too many options.
So for now, the number I feel works for me right now is around 40 items. This includes shoes, outer layers, and purses. Not included in the 40 items are socks, undergarments and accessories. While not included in the 40, the following categories I have strategically limited to a certain number for each:
Workout Clothes – 5 tops, 5 bottoms, 5 sports bras
Swimwear – 1 one-piece, 1 tankini, 2 bikinis, 2 coverups
Pajamas – 1 pair short sleeve with pants, 1 pair long sleeve with pants, 1 pair short sleeve with shorts (weather in Maryland is all over the place in spring, so choices were necessary)
Camisole – 1 in each color: white, cream and black
As an unexpected bi-product, I’m loving how easy it has been to stay on top of laundry! I also enjoy the seasonal transition of style and color, it has helped me to feel like I am getting “new” pieces to add to my closet with each passing season.
I will say, only buying one item a month has been challenging at times. Triggers to impulse-buy has come mostly from Instagram’s sponsored posts that pop up on my feed, clearly targeted from past purchases (Athleta, how I adore thee).
However, I appreciate that I know I can count on the fact that I LOVE everything in my current closet and that it all fits in a way that I feel my best! #ruthlesslypurgeforthewin
It really has eliminated me trying on multiple outfits, because something doesn’t fit right or there is just something I don’t like about a certain item. Getting rid of items that I did not LOVE allowed me to get a better grasp of what my style is and what styles look best on my body type. I was able to see the trend of buying something that looked good on someone else with a different body type, skin tone, etc., but didn’t do much for me when I put it on. So now it’s easy for me to stick to what I know aligns with my style and not someone else’s.
I will soon be posting my spring outfit of the day (#ootd) favorites, to show how I mix and match what I have. This will also serve as a reminder to myself for future outfit inspiration. What colors do you tend to gravitate towards in the spring months? I would love to hear what screams SPRING to you, comment below!
In case you didn’t catch on the blog yesterday, I shared a festive red, white and blue salad to make for your upcoming Memorial Day gathering! Summer is almost upon us and I am here for it!
