Nothing like starting off the new year with a peek into the little things of our life over here. Once a month, I’ll show you a “peek” into different aspects of our life. Ranging from topics of certain areas of our home, how I organize, plan, and do regular life. I love seeing how other moms run their homes, do family, and I always enjoy learning new tips!
You can be on the lookout during 2022 for the following random assortment of topics…
Today’s topic for January is near and dear to my heart. We take coffee seriously around our house. And it doesn’t stop at just our family, but our extended family is just as intense. In fact, my sister-in-law just started her own line of coffee, including designing and branding her own bags! One of my favorite things in January is to see the steam rising off a hot cup of coffee on a cold, wintery day. Our kids enjoy it just as much, and have even incorporated a hot cup of tea to their morning quiet time.
Over the years, Ryan and I have experimented with brewing our coffee in many ways. From pour-overs, stovetop espresso makers, french press, drip coffeemakers, Nespresso machine, to my current favorite of a Jura E8. So now we can brew all of our fancy cups of coffee at home with the touch of a button! We have also used different types of milk frothers, from stovetop hand pumps, to Aerolatte electric handheld. But now the Jura does it on its own! There’s options to brew a cup of coffee, cappuccino (my favorite), latte, etc. I also appreciate the hot water option for tea or warming up my mug before coffee. It’s much quicker than waiting for our electric kettle to heat up. Ryan surprised me with this coffee machine for my birthday this year (after I’ve been telling him about the research I’ve been doing this past year on it), and he was able to find it second-hand for much cheaper than buying new! Ryan’s favorite way to brew coffee is pour-over, which I might agree with him when it comes to taste, but all of the math that goes into his tried-and-true method (he’s an enneagram 4…I’ll just leave it at that) involves waaaay too much brain power for me that early in the morning. I told him if it requires me to use a calculator before my first cup of coffee, it’s a no-go.
Our coffee bar is as such…
Jura machine, seasonal syrups (for when we’re feeling fancy), collagen and liquid stevia for everyday, and the kids enjoy a cup of chai tea with honey before school. Drawer below holds our utensils, so spoons are easily accessible.
My typical cup of coffee first thing in the morning includes one cup of “coffee” selected on the Jura, with half a scoop of collagen, two drops of liquid stevia (any more than that tastes bitter to me) and a good long pour of Nutpods creamer (I like the vanilla and hazelnut flavors).
The beans we use range from a local coffee shop who roasts their own beans (Ceremony “Mass Appeal” is my all-time favorite), to a bulk organic coffee from Amazon (2lb bag of Subtle Earth Organic coffee “Light Roast“), and we are currently drinking my sister-in-law’s new roasted coffee. The one thing we stay true to is always buying whole beans, it is much fresher and more flavorful. To grind the beans, we either use our Capresso Burr Grinder or the Jura machine grinds beans while brewing.
I typically have a second cup either mid-morning or mid-afternoon. I rarely have more than 2 cups of coffee per day, I feel like it sends my adrenal system into overload if I do.
Now when I go to Starbucks, which is few and far between these days, I order a tall Pikes Place coffee with one pump of syrup (pumpkin in the Fall, one of each peppermint and mocha during Christmas, and vanilla the rest of the year). I’ll ask for a small pour of oat milk (I find almond milk to be too bitter to drink in my coffee). The only time I veer away from coffee is to have an occasional chai tea latte.
That pretty much sums up my coffee routine! What is yours? I’d love to hear if you drink coffee every day, how many cups, how you like it with cream and/or flavor. Comment below!
Also, I will be doing a book review at the end of the month. I have my January books picked out if you want to join me! See below for my January reads, can’t wait! Hope you have a great weekend and I’ll see you back here on Monday! xoxo
