Last Sunday, I got back from a long weekend away in Breckenridge, Colorado for a girls ski trip. In past trips we’ve gone skiing in Vail and Beaver Creek, so this was my first time to Breckenridge. This was also the earliest we’ve gone in the ski season, but the advantages were zero lines at the lifts and less stress getting away from home since it was before the chaos of the season hit. The only disadvantage was not as much snow (and a tad icy in some areas of a few slopes), so the beauty of the trees capped with snow was few and far between. However, it was still a majestic and beautiful part of the country to be in and experience!
I wanted to document our travel resources and include what we liked and what we would do differently, for next time we visit Breckenridge.
We were able to book a direct flight on Southwest from Baltimore to Denver, then rented a car and drove two hours from the airport to our condo. The altitude really bothers me, so taking a non-drowsy Dramamine as we left the airport proved to be helpful. Once in Breckendridge, we stopped at Whole Foods to grab some groceries before heading to pick up our ski rentals. After getting fitted and loading our gear into the car, we headed to the condo. It was nice to fly in and arrive in the early afternoon, as it gave us time to run around and take care of everything while there was still daylight.
We stayed in a 2-bedroom, 2-bath condo in The Grandview (Airbnb), which was a first floor condo with ski in/ski out access. It allowed us to walk a short distance from our condo directly onto the 4 O’Clock ski run. The condo had a cozy fireplace and all of the usual basic amenities.
We bought lift tickets through Epic Pass and ski rentals through Blue River Sports.
Our first night we stayed in and assembled a charcuterie board for dinner and got to bed at a reasonable hour. The next morning, we took it slow, had coffee and made a hot breakfast. We headed out the door to ski at 9am. Since it was during the week, the slopes were uncrowded and we never had to wait in a lift line. For lunch, it was super easy to meet back at the condo for lunch, then back out to the slopes until the last run of the day (4:30pm).
That evening we took an uber downtown and did some window shopping on Main Street, which was such a cute, charming historic town! We walked over and had dinner at Fatty’s Pizzeria and picked up some cookies at Mountain Top Cookie Shop, then called it a night and took an uber home.
On Day 2 we again had a slow morning of coffee, eggs and avocado toast, then everyone but me headed out the door for another day of skiing. I had only planned to ski one day, but next time would probably pay for a second day and only ski a half-day. I’m a relatively new skier, so I didn’t want to push myself and get injured. We had another at-home lunch of a charcuterie board, then half of our crew went back out for some more skiing, while the rest of us decided to shower and drive downtown to return ski rentals and do some more shopping. Parking that evening was a definite issue and was pretty pricey ($45 for 2.5 hours), but we would later find out why…
…once we parked and walked to Main Street, we realized the entire street had been blocked off for a Christmas Parade! Unbeknownst to us, there was a Santa Run, a Dog Parade (Bernese Mountain Dogs were everywhere!), and a tree lighting all happening that night. It was so so festive! Afterward, we grabbed some tacos at Mi Casa Mexican Restaurant and Cantina. The food and drinks were good, ambience was lively, but the service was “meh”. However, I would go back again and give it another try. We drove back home, got into our pajamas, and spent the rest of the night playing Uno and Photo Roulette.
Our last morning there, we woke up early and packed up, took care of the condo exit checklist, and were on the road by 7am to head to the airport.
We carved out a little time to make a pit stop at Plume Coffee Bar, the cutest little coffee shop located in an old silver mining town. We arrived at Denver airport and hopped on to our 3 hour flight back home to Baltimore. It was another ski trip in the books! Such sweet memories!
For future reference, we created a checklist for the next time we visit Breckenridge.
Until next time! ⛷🎄
